LEI Personal Vision Statement (PVS)

By God’s grace, to step forward as God’s man/woman, in my spheres of influence, to serve His purposes, for His glory

A. Scripture

  • Ephesians 2: 1-10

    • His grace is sufficient to save, sustain, and sanctify us

    • No matter how much we've sinned, His grace is sufficient

  • II Corinthians 12: 7-10

    • No matter how hard it is, or how much it costs, or how weak we are, His grace is sufficient

  • I Peter 5: 5-7

    • To receive more of God's grace (that saves, sustains, sanctifies) we must oppose our pride and choose to humble ourselves

  • Acts 17: 22-28

    • God does not need mankind to accomplish His purposes, but chooses to incorporate us in His grace

B. Godly Counsel and Clarifying Thoughts

The Bible’s purpose is not so much to show you how to live a good life. The Bible’s purpose is to show you how God’s grace breaks into your life against your will and saves you from the sin and brokenness otherwise you would never be able to overcome... religion is ‘if you obey, then you will be accepted’. But the Gospel is, ‘if you are absolutely accepted, and sure you’re accepted, only then will you ever begin to obey’. Those are two utterly different things. Every page of the Bible shows the difference. ~ Tim Keller

C. Summary: By what means will I be able to accomplish anything? The grace of God.

II. To Step Forward

A. Scripture

  • Philippians 3: 12-14

    • The call placed on our lives by our recreation in Christ demands that we live our lives with intentionality

  • Romans 12:1

    • Worship of and service to God requires an active, intentional, and sacrificial presentation of our bodies and lives

  • Matthew 5: 14-16

    • We are called to be salt and light, a people who will consider how to thoughtfully demonstrate God's glory to others

B. Godly Counsel and Clarifying Thoughts

Our primary calling as followers of Christ is by Him, to Him, and for Him. Our secondary calling, considering who God is as sovereign, is that everyone, everywhere, and in everything should think, speak, live, and act entirely for Him. ~ Os Guinness

C. Summary: How am I to respond to God's grace? By stepping forward,
intentionally seeking to serve and influence in all my life's contexts.

III.  As God's Man/Woman

A. Scripture

  • I Corinthians 6: 19-20

    • You have been bought with a price, and now serve as a temple of the Holy Spirit

  •  I Peter 1:13-19

    • Your life has been ransomed from its former ways, to serve a new purpose as part of a new people

  • Ephesians 1: 4-6

    • You are now a son or daughter of the perfect King, and so your identity is established as one of great value, and you have no need to earn or prove it

  • Genesis 1: 27

    • Gender is an intentional part of God's design, and through our gender we represent God as his image-bearers

B. Godly Counsel and Clarifying Thoughts

Our body has not only been created by God and one day will be resurrected by him, but it has been bought by Christ's blood and is indwelt by his Spirit. Thus it belongs to God three times over, by creation, redemption, and indwelling. How then, since it does not belong to us, can we misuse it? Instead, we are to honour God with it, by obedience and self-control. Bought by Christ, we have no business to become the slaves of anybody or anything else. Once we were slaves of sin; now we are the slaves of Christ, and his service is the true freedom. ~John Stott

C. Summary: Where should I do this? In my spheres of influence.

IV. In my spheres of influence

A. Scripture

  • Esther 4:14

    • God placed Esther in her position in the court in order that she might serve Him

  • Luke 8: 38-39

    • The Gerasene Demoniac was called to declare Christ in the context of his home

  • Genesis 50: 20

    • Though Joseph came to Egypt in adverse circumstances, God intentionally placed him in his specific spheres of influence to do good

B. Godly Counsel and Clarifying Thoughts

  • My= Ownership and responsibility

  • Spheres= Specific places and relationships

  • Influence= Intentional, purposeful impact

C. Summary: Where should I do this? In my spheres of influence.

V. To serve His purposes

A. Scripture

  • Matthew 6: 10

    • Christ taught that in all things, believers are to pray God's will be done

  • Ephesians 2: 10

    • God has saved us not only from sin, but saved us to live in a new way of life, which he has prepared beforehand for us

  • Acts 13: 36

    • God has purposes that we are called to fulfill-- think of all of the purposes that David fulfilled in his lifetime and how varied they were

  • Colossians 3: 22-25

    • Regardless of our earthly position, we are to work for God and with our eternal reward in mind

B. Godly Counsel and Clarifying Thoughts

Refuting man's artificial division of the sacred and the secular:

  • Whether we perceive them to be spiritual or earthly, all callings serve God's purposes. "Calling is the truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested with a special devotion, dynamism, and direction lived out as a response to His summons and service." ~ Os Guinness

  • "For Martin Luther and subsequent reformers, the recovery of the holistic understanding of call was dramatic. Writing about the "Estate of Marriage" in 1522, Luther declared that God and the angels smile when a man changes a diaper. William Tyndale wrote that, if our desire is to please God, pouring water, washing clothes, cobbling shoes, and preaching the Word "is all one." ~Os Guinness

VI. For His Glory

A.  Scripture

  • I Corinthians 10: 31

    • God being glorified, or made much of, is the goal of all of our life

  • Isaiah 48: 9-11

    • God acts for the sake of His own name, because He is what is best

  • John 11 (whole chapter, with verse 40 as key verse)

    • Though it may seem counterintuitive, the goal of suffering, disappointments and challenges is God being glorified

  • I Peter 4: 10-11

    • God gives His children gifts in order that we might glorify Him with them

B. Godly Counsel and Clarifying Thoughts

The plea, "Hallowed be your name," is the only petition in the Lord's Prayer where an explicit act of the human heart is named. The act of hallowing. All the other petitions serve this. The kingdom comes for this. God's will is done for this. Daily bread is for this. Forgiveness is for this. Escape from temptation and evil is for this. ~ John Piper

C. Summary: To what end? The glory of God.
